Now that summer is just a distant memory, drowned out by the sound of our chattering teeth, we think it’s time to serve up the perfect remedy for that winter blues.
Released on the Suol Summer Daze compilation, the original version of “Drifter” by Nils Penner & HRRSN was the type of track we really love here at Suol, where great songwriting goes hand in hand with a stomping club beat and lush electronic sounds. “Drifter” excelled at this, making it one of the highlights of the release.
Johnjon aka John Muder (who runs Suol alongside Chi-Thien Nguyen aka Chopstick) certainly thought so. After instantly falling in love with the song he had his mind firmly set on remixing it. Here is the result, and what a remix it turned out to be.
It only took sending over a couple of rough versions to the original artists and they were sold. HRRSN even dropped in to re-record the vocals exactly how Johnjon pictured them for his remix.
Johnjon’s approach was to turn “Drifter” into a deep house anthem, opting for an 808 style drum track, replacing the super straight stompiness of the original’s beat with shuffling hi-hats and seriously housing things up with some nifty percussion programming. Along with the deepest of subs, hypnotically looping chords and mind-altering effect journeys throughout the track, here is a record that will have the clubbers drifting towards the centre of the dance floor. Test runs on the Chopstick & Johnjon radio show and in the clubs are already attracting track ID trainspotters in numbers.
